Hello everyone and welcome to day 19 of Blogmas! It’s probably not a shock to you all that I like musicals quite a bit. 2019 was a very good year for me when it came to discovering new musicals. In 2020, I’m hoping to continue with this but of course, I live in the middle of nowhere and so the amount of times I can be in London or go to the theatre is limited.
This is why this list is limited to 5 musicals. All of these I haven’t seen before and they’re all musicals that I don’t have any current plans to see at this moment in time so you won’t see Six or Come From Away. They’re also musicals that are currently in or will be in the West End.
Let’s get to it!
1) The Book of Mormon
I have been desperate to see The Book of Mormon for such a long time now. I remember seeing the 2014 Olivier Awards performance and thinking “I need to go now, please!”
The Book of Mormon follows the story of two young Mormon missionaries, Elder Price and Elder Cunningham, who are working to spread the word of the Latter Day Saints to locals in a small town in Uganda. The LDS church members realise how daunting their task is when they discover the villagers are more concerned with the AIDS epidemic, oppression, and starvation.
2) Be More Chill
As I’m writing this, the principle cast has just been announced for this musical which makes me even more desperate to see it. Millie O’Connell and Renee Lamb, best known for Six, are going to be in this musical which I’m very excited about. Millie was incredible in Soho Cinders which I was lucky to see in November.
Be More Chill tells the story of a high school teenager who takes a pill to become more popular.
3) Dear Evan Hansen
2 or 3 years ago, my friend introduced me to the soundtrack of Dear Evan Hansen and it made me sob. I completely related to the lyrics of each song and I knew I had to see the musical if it ever came to London. I’m so glad it’s now in the West End because I need to make a trip to see it ASAP.
A letter that was never meant to be seen, a lie that was never meant to be told, a life he never dreamed he could have. Evan Hansen is about to get the one thing he’s always wanted: a chance to finally fit in. DEAR EVAN HANSEN is the deeply personal and profoundly contemporary musical about life and the way we live it.
Waitress is one of those musicals I know I will get to see one day. Thankfully, this show is going on tour in late 2020 and it’s coming close to where I live so I will be able to see this at some point in the future without making a long trip to London.
The musical follows a young waitress in a diner who dreams of leaving her job and forging a life of her own.
I am so desperate to see Wicked. The set design looks incredible and the songs are amazing. I hope to see it soon.
It tells the incredible untold story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two young women who first meet as sorcery students. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
Thank you so much for reading! What musicals are you hoping to see in 2020? Let me know!
